As costume dramas go, this is a passionate and feisty one, keyed by the ever-luminous Vanessa Redgrave in the title role and the sharp-edged Glenda Jackson as her jealous cousin, QUn Elizabeth I (who knew a thing or two about palace intrigu). Mary, who was raised in France as a Catholic, claims the Scottish crown from her mother upon her death. But she runs up against religious prejudice, both from the Protestant Elizabeth (who had encountered anti-Protestant bias before she took the throne) and from Mary’s Protestant half-brother James Stuart (Patrick McGoohan). Elizabeth, whose own reign is shaky (given a strong Catholic presence in her country), is nervous about her Catholic cousin–and made more so by Mary’s seeming inability to appreciate the political niceties of the period. Redgrave received an Oscar nomination for her performance. –Marshall Fine

Between his directorial duties on A Perfect World and The Bridges of Madison County, Clint Eastwood starred in this pulse-racing 1993 thriller. In the Line of Fire was directed by Wolfgang Petersen, the brilliant director of the World War II U-boat masterpiece Das Boot. Eastwood gives one of his best performances as Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan, who still feels responsible for the death of JFK 30 years earlier. Horrigan gets a shot at redemption when challenged by a psychotic but highly intelligent assassin (John Malkovich) who intends to kill the current U.S. president. Tension builds as this intellectual cat-and-mouse game reaches its climactic confrontation, but not before we’ve seen the killer at work, covering his trail with ruthless precision. Tightly scripted by Jeff Maguire, the film cuts Malkovich loose as one of the most memorable screen villains of the 1990s, and costars Rene Russo as Eastwood’s sharp Secret Service colleagu and romantic partner. –Jeff Shannon

The subtext of this grim, snail-paced Francis Ford Coppola film is the death of Coppola’s son, Giancarlo, in a boating accident. Coppola came back with this Vietnam-era military drama about the men assigned to patrol and serve at the funerals at Arlington National Cemetery. James Caan is the world-weary patrol leader with a fatherly interest in a gung-ho cadet (D.B. Sweeney). Caan tries to show Sweeney the potentially fatal future that awaits him if he volunteers for combat, but he can’t break through his young charge’s zealousness. The subplot involves crusty Caan’s attempts at romance with Anjelica Huston, who can’t quite fathom his contradictions. The story is all glum and lumbering, despite a warm, full-bodied performance by James Earl Jones as one of Caan’s buddies. –Marshall Fine

Like It Is is much like watching a train wreck–the very idea of it is repellent and yet you perversely can’t avert your eyes. While its urban grittiness and sooty veneer entranced some critics who mistook its violent, netherworld neorealism for art, Like It Is offers little in the way of redemption, positive gay imaging, or even particularly good narrative.
Paul Oremland directed this venture about a young, gay Blackpool tough named Craig (Steve Bell) who bare-knuckle boxes for money. He ultimately moves to London in search of a better life and falls in with the trendy London gay club scene, meeting and falling for a handsome record producer named Matt (Ian Rose) and his wealthy boss (played by the Who’s lead singer Roger Daltrey). The better life is quickly tainted by disillusion and misery, much as is the viewing experience.
Steve Bell is, in real life, a featherweight boxing champion in Britain and therefore brings an urgent and raw vitality to the lead, but the characters as a whole are either irritating or unsympathetic, and it’s ultimately difficult to find anyone to care for, or a story worth empathizing with. –Paula Nechak

Set exclusively in an older woman’s crumbling apartment, ALMANAC OF FALL follows the actions of a group of conniving characters who are motivated by money and sex. The woman’s son, her nurse, and several others vie for her money as they quarrel, maneuver, and betray, creating a bitter emotional climate worthy of Strindberg. Master director Bela Tarr, in one of his few films in color, uses inventive camera angles, a constantly moving camera, and a rigid color scheme as a strategy to comment on the characters’ power struggle. Often overlooked by Tarr enthusiasts, ALMANAC OF FALL is an important work by this gifted and original filmmaker which marks a turning point between the social realism of his early career and the distinctive visual style of his later acclaimed films such as DAMNATION, SATANTANGO and WERCKMEISTER HARMONIES.

Jim Jarmusch’s low-tech tribute to the 30-year-old collaboration between grunge godfather Neil Young and his favorite garage band, Crazy Horse, is both a quirky little movie and a monument to one of rock & roll’s greatest noisemakers. Partially culled from some gritty archival material shot in 1976 and 1986, and supplemented by lots of super-8 footage of Young and Crazy Horse between shows while on a concert tour (the concert footage itself appears to be shot on 16mm), Year of the Horse is very much like one of the band’s paradoxical performances: epic but transitory, ragged but direct, focused but improvisational. Jarmusch understands Crazy Horse and its quixotic musical qust too well to embalm them in a conventional profile-and-performance “rockumentary.” Instead, he honors the off-and-on marriage of Young and the others by treating the various chapters of their lives together as shadows in time, fleeting glimpses of a brotherhood that has no secrets.
Jarmusch devotes some time to the ghosts in this film–Danny Whitten, Crazy Horse’s original guitarist, and the band’s late manager–then disperses them with eerie, soundless footage of black-and-white shapes that flutter off into their own void. It’s the same poetic dance of light and shadow that caught Jarmusch’s fancy in Stranger Than Paradise and Dead Man, but here–as with Neil Young and Crazy Horse at their musical best–it is pure in its essence, nonliteral, pouring in from some fount of raw discovery and inspiration. Exciting stuff, as are performances of band workhorses such as “Sedan Delivery” and the gorgeous “Like a Hurricane.” –Tom Keogh
